Schlachthofbronx: Dun Dem/Soundbad (ZamZam Sounds 2018)
I never do the best job at keeping up with Portland, OR's ZamZam Sounds label, one of several northwestern dub labels that are keeping the music forward-facing as always with their deep catalog of seven-inch releases. Despite not being familiar with the Munich, Germany duo of Schlachthofbronx, something about this release jumped out at me from the jump and that gut feeling was rewarded in kind with the dubstep dominator of A-side cut "Dun Dem." As someone who was really into dubstep through 2008, I'm not particularly eager to listen to much of the new halfstep that comes out, but from the opening morse code pounding of the menacingly ring-modulated two-note hook and the galloping kicks, this track just refuses to be ignored. And by the time that drop comes after a solid ninety seconds of build, it hits hard as the kick double times for emphasis and the track's title comes rolling down the mountainside encased in foggy echo. "Soundbad" on the flip is fairly more standard dub fare, but still packs a wallop in the finest of dystopian dub stylings.
